20 Years Under One Supportive Roof

Nearly two decades ago, Jill and Lea moved into their Habitat home. A home built not just with lumber and nails, but with love and teamwork. Today, they continue to thrive under the roof they helped raise—a home that has meant so much more than shelter

We recently sat down with Jill and Lea, along with their moms, Sue and Kris, to reflect on what 20 years in their Habitat home has meant. Their conversation was filled with laughter, gratitude, and powerful memories. Watch the video below to hear their full story!

“It’s allowed them to grow into their independence, they’ve built stability here—friendships, work, volunteer activities, and the confidence to make their own decisions.”

– Kris, Lea’s mom

For Jill and Lea, the home has provided independence, stability, and affordability—key ingredients to living full, meaningful lives. That independence was especially critical for Lea, who had undergone several hip surgeries before they moved in. At the time, she was in a wheelchair and had been told she’d likely never walk again. Though she now uses a walker, accessibility remains a central part of her daily life. Thankfully, the home was thoughtfully adapted to support her from the very beginning.

The sidewalk was designed to gradually slope up to the main entrance, creating a smooth, step-free path that Lea could easily navigate. Inside, the layout was designed with her mobility in mind: the bathroom and shower were expanded to accommodate a wheelchair. Even the kitchen was adjusted—the cabinets and microwave were lowered so that Lea could reach it whether seated or standing.

Kris, Lea’s mom, is especially grateful for the way Habitat listened and responded to their needs. “One of the things I appreciated most was the flexibility of the Habitat staff,” she shared. “They really took the time to evaluate the individual needs of the people moving into the home—and they met those needs so well. That’s one of the reasons Lea loves this house because she can come and go easily.”

Today, with the mortgage nearly paid off and a strong support system in place, both families are filled with peace of mind. “As a mom, it’s reassuring to know Jill’s future is secure,” Sue said. “Everything’s in place.”

The most memorable moment? The dedication. “It was around Christmas,” Kris said. “The house was filled with people. The Methodist church had donated a decorated tree. There were so many people we had to wait for others to leave before more could come in.”

The sense of community hasn’t faded. Sue and Kris still run into members of the Senior Crew and Habitat staff who helped on the build—many of whom remember Jill and Lea with warmth and affection. “There was always a lot of joking, camaraderie, and kindness,” said Kris. “We’re just so grateful.”

Twenty years later, the walls of Jill and Lea’s home still echo with the love and laughter that built them. What began as a groundbreaking project for Fox Cities Habitat has grown into a beautiful testament to what’s possible when a community comes together with compassion and purpose. For Jill and Lea, it’s not just a house—it’s a place where they’ve found belonging, built independence, and created a future rooted in joy. Their journey continues to inspire, reminding us all of the lasting power of a safe, affordable home.
