The journey to homeownership requires resilience and determination, and for Noel and Nadiesky, it was no exception. Originally from Cuba, this couple endured profound hardships under the ruling of the Castro brothers. They fought for equal human rights and were persecuted because of it. Noel’s father served in the Cuban Government before the Castro brothers’ rise to power, and because of that, Noel was not allowed the opportunity to receive an education. Nadiesky, a law school graduate from the University of Havana, was barred from practicing her profession after marrying Noel. Even Claudia, Nadiesky’s eldest daughter, was prevented from completing her education beyond sixth grade, despite not being Noel’s biological child. Their values and connections to the previous government clashed with the current government standings, leading to the loss of their basic rights. It was then they realized that leaving Cuba was not just an option but a necessity for their safety and their family’s future.
Building a New Beginning
The family arrived in America in 2014 and moved to Appleton, a city that felt entirely unfamiliar. Everything was different; the food, the language, the weather, and even the stores, making their transition both challenging and overwhelming. Adding to the pressure, Nadiesky was pregnant, intensifying their need to find a place to call home. Despite the hurdles, they persevered, holding tightly to their dream of building a life where their family could thrive in safety, peace, and love. Their determination to lay down roots and create a bright future never wavered.
One evening, during the time they lived in a hotel, Nadiesky watched a television segment featuring a Habitat for Humanity home dedication. She was moved by the ribbon-cutting ceremony and the tears of joy as a family received the keys to their new home. Inspired, she held onto that dream, and the family began to adjust to their new surroundings. Over time, they started building a life in Appleton. Noel Jr. was born, Claudia settled into school, Noel found work, and finally they moved into an apartment. As they grew more comfortable in their new community, they applied for homeownership through the Fox Cities Habitat Homebuyer Program. In 2016, their dreams finally became a reality when they moved into a home of their own, starting the life filled with safety, love and community they longed for.
Their new home is part of the Nienhaus Square, a vibrant block of homes in Appleton made possible by the generosity of philanthropist Mary Beth Nienhaus. A dedicated advocate for positive change, Mary Beth has not only sponsored transformative projects but has personally rolled up her sleeves and contributed time and love into improving the Fox Cities. Her commitment to the community has created lasting impacts and touched many lives, making her a true pillar of our community and a source of inspiration for all!
We were fortunate to catch up with Nadiesky a few months ago, marking nearly 8 years since they earned the keys to their home. Their house symbolized a fresh start, a place where they could rebuild their lives and give their children the opportunities they never had in Cuba. Since moving in, their lives have flourished! Claudia, now married, recently returned to Wisconsin after living in Florida. She and her husband are excited to raise their future children in a community that’s welcoming and perfect for families. Meanwhile, Noel Jr., now a lively child, treasures his home. His backyard has become his personal oasis, complete with a pool, playground, trampoline, and plenty of space to play with his friends. For Nadiesky and Noel, their home is more than a structure; it’s a canvas for their creativity and joy. Owning their home represents more than financial stability, it’s about freedom. Freedom to decorate how they want, freedom for Noel Jr. to play without worrying about noise complaints, and freedom from landlords. They’ve transformed their basement into a cozy family space where Noel Jr. can play, and everyone can relax together. Their backyard has become a cherished gathering place for family and friends, a sunny haven for laughter, relaxation, and refreshing swims in the pool. It’s more than just a space; it’s a reflection of their journey and the love that binds them. Noel and Nadiesky even chose this special spot to renew their wedding vows, a heartfelt celebration of the family and love that had been the foundation of their lives and the driving force behind their remarkable journey.
“Every dollar I spend toward my house now is an investment that benefits me and my family because it is our house, not someone else’s. I’m so proud that I have a safe place for my family, we don’t ever have to worry about getting kicked out by a landlord. This is the most important part of having a home, is having a safe place my kids can come to anytime”
-Nadiesky
The highlight of their year is Christmas, where their Christmas spirit is infectious. Each year their home dazzles with twinkling lights and decorations. They put up multiple Christmas trees around their home and Nadiesky even crafts a life-size nutcracker to display every year! Nadiesky and Noel have also embraced their roles as Santa and Mrs. Claus, spreading joy to family and friends. Each December, their home becomes the heart of Christmas celebrations, filled with laughter, warmth, delicious food and cherished memories.
Nadiesky, Noel, Claudia, and Noel Jr. are the embodiment of what a Habitat for Humanity home can offer: security, opportunity, and a sense of belonging. Their journey from persecution to peace is a testament to the strength of their spirit and the power of our community.
As they continue to fill their home with love, laughter, and the magic of Christmas, they remind us of the true meaning of home, a place where dreams are nurtured, memories are made, and families thrive.
