Staff Spotlight | Angie Demers

Tell us a little about your background (where you grew up, your family, your career, etc.)

I grew up in Oshkosh, graduated from Oshkosh North, went to UW-Oshkosh initially as an English major, then switched to Graphic Communication. I also attended Fox Valley Tech in the Administrative Assistant program. I’ve worked for many non-profit organizations, as well as many large corporate offices. I was a graphic designer for 15 years, as well as keeping up with my admin skills at the same time. I’ve worked with animal rescuers, veterinarians, engineers, lawyers, artists, factory workers, cupcakes, jewelry, video games, cars, and many more! I met my husband when my sister dared me to try on-line dating, and we’ve been married almost 11 years now. I moved all the way to Neenah after I got married, then we bought a house in Menasha a year after that. We have two sassy furbaby dogs – a female Shiba Inu and a male Shiba-Mini American Eskimo mix that keep us on our toes.

2. What made you decide to work for Habitat? I volunteered as a teenager with my dad and our church youth group on a Habitat build in Oshkosh, then in my 20’s I was the volunteer Marketing/PR Coordinator for the Oshkosh Habitat for a few years until I got married and moved out of Oshkosh. I’ve always loved the organization and was a huge fan of the ReStore since it opened, so when I saw the email and Facebook post that Habitat was hiring – I jumped on the opportunity to work for one of my favorite non-profits, and make use of my background and skills. The rest is history – I’ve been here almost 10 months now and I love waking up and looking forward to going to work every day. It helps that my co-workers are the most compassionate people and are like family.

3. When not working at Habitat what do you do? (other volunteering, hobbies, work, etc.) My husband and I are very active in our fellowship, and we try to get involved helping out our local community. As far as hobbies go, I read, paint, bake, I’m in a weekly crochet group, I make jewelry, play video games, go hiking, I play a few instruments, we are now intern Master Gardeners and I’m the newsletter editor for our local community gardens, I’m part of a Sustainability Committee, and I love going on road trips.

4. What do you enjoy most about Habitat? (what work do you like most, what keeps you coming back, etc.) I love being able to give families a hand UP, and know that we are providing a home and fulfilling dreams for the families we work with. The people I work with are amazing, and even though I’ve only been here 10 months, I feel like I’m part of the Habitat family. I love the daily challenges and the variety of tasks I do every day, and being able to put so many of my skills to use.

5. What is something about you that might be a surprise to those with whom you work? I got to meet Johnny Depp when he was in Oshkosh filming Public Enemies. My friend and I took a few days off to watch the filming and ended up befriending the Assistant Director and he clued us in on where to go to get the best spot when Johnny came by to shake hands. I got some great close-up photos!
