1. Tell us a little about your background (where you grew up, your family, your career, etc.)
Sue and I are both originally from Illinois, and yes we are still Bear fans! I was career Navy so Sue followed me around the world for the first 12 years of our marriage. After retiring, we settled in Appleton. I am retired after working with several companies including Walmart and the Fox Valley Warming Shelter. Sue is still working third shift with the Appleton Police Department as a Communications Specialist. She has been there 19 years and just doesn’t want to leave the night crew!
We have three grown children and they are currently embarking on building their own lives! Willow is working full-time, Kathleen just was married in March & Matthew will be married in July, 2018.
2. What made you decide to volunteer for Habitat?
Sue started volunteering with Habitat through St. Joseph’s first Interfaith Build back in 2014. She dragged me to the first Rock the Block in Appleton in 2015 and we have been full steam ahead since then (sorry for the Navy pun). I joined Senior Crew shortly after the RTB, but it took Sue until this year to add her name to the Senior Crew list. I enjoy the Rehabs and Sue does Site Support and builds still with St. Joe’s on the Interfaith Builds.
3. When not volunteering with Habitat what do you do? (other volunteering, hobbies, work, etc.)
I love to Fish! I don’t have a boat but shore fishing is so relaxing! We planted a garden this year which is new for us, so we will see how that goes. Because Sue still has to work – 9 years until retirement – so she spends her time with Church Committees and Habitat. We both love to camp – last year we took a 30 day camping trip to the west coast – Seattle, Vancouver Canada, Columbia River Gorge, Yellowstone and the Black Hills to name a few places we tented!
4. What do you enjoy most about Habitat? (what work do you like most, what keeps you coming back, etc.)
Habitat is special to us because of the people. Not only the families we get to build for, but the individuals who volunteer day to day. Everyone is always so upbeat even if it is pouring!
5. What is something about you that might be a surprise to those with whom you volunteer?
We can’t think of anything for this topic. We live boring lives
