My name is Jacques (“Jackie”). I am a single Mother of 3 wonderful kids. I moved to the Fox Cities 15 years ago from Chicago. My main reason for relocating here was to raise my kids in a safe environment and to become self sufficient. I currently work and attend college full time. I am super busy but I have goals that I have set and I am determined to accomplish.
About a year and a half ago, I had a heart attack which was actually a blessing in disguise. I know it sounds weird to say such a thing but going through something like that gave me a different outlook on life. My life literally flashed before my eyes and I then came to the realization that I can be taken from this Earth and not have ever been married or owned a home. I know that should have been the last thing to think about but I also was thinking about my kids and how I have to set a good example for them and build a foundation to where they are well cared for.
First I wanted to be a homeowner and went to many steps to accomplish this. I tried other programs but found I was overwhelmed with trying to build my credit score. I then went to budget counseling and my counselor recommended the Habitat for Humanity program and thought I would be a great fit. I decided to apply and I thought to myself that I would never get picked for something like this. I wasn’t trying to be negative, but I just did not want to get my hopes up high. I took all necessary measures to meet the requirements for the program.
One day while at work, I got the call from Habitat for Humanity. I was chosen for the program. I immediately thanked God and of course called my kids. They then told the rest of our family because they were overjoyed. Of course they then started to make plans for the house and how they wanted a built in pool and a space to play basketball. I had to remind them that this was not an episode of Extreme Home Makeover but we would actually have our own home.
Lord knows how much I wanted this and how much I sacrificed for this opportunity. I am forever grateful to Habitat for Humanity for giving me a chance and helping me accomplish my goals. Not only am I grateful for everyday I wake up and now I am going to be a homeowner. My journey is just beginning and I just want to thank Habitat for Humanity for being apart of this journey.
Thank you so much,
The Lofton Family
