200th Home Spotlight | The Sierra Family

Written by Berenice Sierra | 200th Home Family Partner

Hello, my name is Berenice. My husband Jose and I have two wonderful children; our four year old daughter Neomi and our two year old son Christopher. Together, with Habitat for Humanity, we are partnering to build our new home.

My family has dreamed of owning a safe, decent and affordable home and Habitat for Humanity with its many volunteers is making that dream a reality. Finding out we were chosen to partner with Habitat was a true blessing. It was at that point I was grateful my kids would have a safe and accessible home that they can call their own.

Neomi is an active little girl that loves to play but doesn’t have much space in our apartment. I am fearful to let her play outside because of the traffic on our street that makes it very dangerous. Having space indoors to play and make noise in as well as a backyard to run around in will be much safer for her.

Christopher was born with Spina Bifida and requires special care. He has had many surgeries and treatments but is always such a happy boy. While we were told that Christopher would never walk, he has made great progress. He requires special equipment that does not fit in our second floor apartment.

Habitat has given us the ability to build our home to accommodate Christopher, his wheel chair and any other necessities he needs to get around in his own home. This will give us the ability to better care for him now and provide Christopher with the freedom he needs to grow.

Habitat has provided many classes to help us become good homeowners. We have learned how to take care of our lawn, how to be good neighbors and manage our finances. Having a budget coach that sits down with us has been wonderful, we are very thankful for that.

Jose and I are having an incredible experience working with Habitat and their wonderful staff and volunteers. We have enjoyed meeting new people, working with other Habitat families on their homes and becoming friends.

Through this experience Habitat for Humanity is giving us not only a foundation to build our home, but also the foundation for a safe and hopeful future for our entire family.

We would like to thank everyone that has helped us on this journey and are looking forward to celebrating in our new home. We truly feel blessed for this opportunity. We will forever be thankful to the many people helping us build our home and partnering with us to make this dream a reality.

Thank you all,
The Sierra Family
